I live Art as a field to understand the world and most importantly as a tool to transform it. Art is entangled with areas of knowledge nurtured by imagination and creativity; two exclusively human intellectual forces that are essential to build a better world. Art has the potential to play an important roll to reinforce a peaceful, compassionate and sustainable world. The teaching of Art should be ethically consistent with the pursuit of these three principles of conceiving our existence.
Although the everyday reality confronts and defies our ideal views, Art owns a transformative dynamism able to propagate a positive energy among artist-students and viewers.
My pedagogical curriculum is formed under 3 main aspects:
- Art as creative recycling machine. Like the Italian movement Art Povera promoting creation out of garbage and litter and ready made objects.
- Art as a critical thinking tool necessary to interpret, dissect and unveil the monetary interests that contribute to the prevalence of inequality and injustice. A great example in New York City is the project from conceptual artist Hans Haacke who exposed the abuse of slum landlord Harry Shapolsky.
- Art as a global cooperative agency. Beyond the individualism of the Art as a discipline I encourage my students to plan and work collectively in ambitious social projects where democratic values like Freedom of speech and respect for the other are being put in practice.
